The SCOOP: The Saponi were tattle-tells and everyone was afraid of the Mighty Tuscaroras

This research reveals only 30 Saponi in 1708, and plenty of war with our Tuscarora against those determined colonists.

Logistically, in 1708, Virginia was part of Tuscarora Territory for these major traders who traveled all the way to Canada and back down to into the borders of Florida.

The Algonquian Powhatans had been warriors but were reduced to a tributary status, making yearly payments to the colonial government as a sign of dependence when they lost all lands between the York and Blackwater Rivers, when in 1677 another treaty was made with the colonists. 

While our Mighty Tuscaroras were still giving "the Lord's men their due." WAR!



With only 30 Saponi bowmen one may reasonably guesstimate just as many women and maybe some children in 1708, so, perhaps there were 80 to 100 altogether.

According to this same research, the Saponi were informants to the Colonists and it looks like the Saponi may have also been afraid of the Tuscaroras. 

This is interesting because there are some out there who believe the Saponi are Tuscarora. Now, I'm not buying that theory any longer.

On top of that, in 1708 Lawson wrote that he came upon a Tuscarora hunting party of 500 men and that there were so many Tuscarora in the region that he could not count them all. That is another reason -

Everyone was afraid of the Mighty Tuscaroras.

  The Town of Cameron holds a public hearing at its May 23, 2023 regular meeting. The Town of Cameron discussed harassment and discord among board members at its May 23 regular meeting. The discussion began after the public hearing when Kay Kelly read pages of concerns. She read the North Carolina General Statute 168-86 on ethics and education. “I am extremely upset with actions of the board. You have been elected to support the best interests of the people,” Kelly said about the board making decisions without a full board and without public notice. The town board had only three members for several months and recently recruited new members for a full board. Cameron, NC receives 400k grant for Dewberry Barn & Vineyards Event Venue

  North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper announced the Town of Cameron as recipients of a $400,000 grant June 15, 2023. Cameron received the grant under the Community Enhancements Category. At Cameron’s regular meeting in Jan. 2023, the board voted to accept Mayor Pro Tempore Ginger Bauerband’s proposal for Dewberry Barn & Vineyards Event Venue. She initiated the project, designed flyers, wrote the grant with Triangle J and contacted the property owners, who agreed to sell the property at $10,00 per acre. The Rural Transformation Grant Fund is for revitalizing downtown districts, building the capacity of local government staffs, revitalizing neighborhoods, fostering small business recovery, and supporting economic growth initiatives. The Dewberry Barn & Vineyards Event Venue property adjoins Phillips Memorial Park. Looks like Cameron is on the rebound for being the Dewberry Capital once more.
