The SCOOP: Tuscaroras worked The Lost Colonists at their copper mines
Excerpt from Strachey's text in The Historie of Travaile into Virginia concerning The Lost Colonists working as Tuscaroras' coppersmiths:
Bear in mind that Croatan is Hatteras is Tuscarora, and Roanoak is a Tuscarora trading post and "mayde" is maid is female.
Why does this matter?
Because the Tuscarora legacy has been desecrated by conquerors' misconceptions, misspellings, derogatory language that drove further angst against the Natives and continues in the 21st Century as the friendly NC Tuscaroras seek justice from under the dominant Lumbees.
For example: Excerpt from The Exsanguination of the Second Society:
Scholarly Historical Fiction Relating to Robeson County, North Carolina’s
Tuscarora:
“They changed their name in 1885 and these
same people shop for new identities all the time up in Washington. The Lumbee
claim that the Tuscarora are a “splinter group” of their tribe when all along,
a lot of ‘em are Tuscarora. Did you know that the tribe once tried to claim
that they were Tuscarora in an earlier hearing and were denied? ⁷ If this group
of sixty-thousand members, the largest in North Carolina, did not receive funds
for economic relief based on enrollment numbers, they wouldn’t care one iota
that Robeson’s Tuscarora are working on their own recognition proposal.”
“Ah, hell, you say!” the well-suited man in
the mid-section shot up like a silver bullet.
“Now, Sir, I know the truth is a hard knock
sometimes, but we need to keep calm. I was warned about how hot this
presentation was, and I want everyone to know that this is the same riotous
behavior that got those colonists killed,” the suited man sat back down, but
was wound so tight he’d squeezed all the blood right out of his ears until they
sailed white against his blistered face, “Powhattan’s priests got the King
wound up and slaughtered most of those colonists. Listen: This latest federal
recognition deal strikes the history-repeat button here and you’ll see it too.
I’m gonna explain it: Raleigh’s first shipment of Christians were scared off by
the Indians and went back to England. Then, in 1586, after Raleigh’s second
shipment of Christians had been murdered by the Powhattan and the seven
colonists; four men, two boys, and a young woman, were seen working as
coppersmiths for the Tuscarora, there was a man named John Pory of Jamestown
who went and stirred up the crap pot again. Pory proposed that the Algonquin Chowanoke
trespass against the Mighty Tuscarora for some western copper mines. ⁸ (pages
11-12).
